Inside

Indian Art and Craft Pop-Up Shop
Through August 14, the Philadelphia Art Alliance offers unique handcrafted objects made by artisans from the West Bengal Craft Council. In the second floor galleries is a display of luxurious scarves, hand-embroidered textiles, and magnificent saris, as well as a range of objects in clay, bronze, silk, and paper. Presiding over all these wares is a monumental wooden statue of the Goddess Durga, made in Kolkata and blessed before her long sea voyage to the United States. Come by for a special shopping experience, and the opportunity to support artisans who are keeping ancient craft traditions alive in modern India. The shop is open by appointment only. For an appointment, call 215.545.4302 or email fward@philartalliance.org.

Lots and Lots of Bugs
Bug Fest, the annual festival that celebrates insects of all kinds with hundreds of live critters, roach races, bug walks, and even insect-tasting, will be held August 13 and 14, 10am-5pm, at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. Hundreds of live beetles, millipedes, centipedes, scorpions, stick insects, caterpillars, tarantulas, and more will be wiggling around the museum during this popular family event. Visitors will be able to help build a beehive, examine insect decomposers up close, work on a giant termite mound and meet Academy entomologists who can share their stories of life in the field. Some live insects and also specimens from the Academy’s research collection of more than 4 million insects will be on display. Sponsored by Western Pest Services.
